Department of Justice Intervenes in Legal Challenge to Halt the State of California's Redistricting Plan
The US Justice Department has officially joined a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, seeking to prevent the state's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This legal action, filed in a US district court, targets the map supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was developed in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"The state's redistricting scheme constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that violates civil rights and mocks the democratic process," stated the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the new maps will survive legal scrutiny.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized racial considerations to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in contravention of the federal constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," stated a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the major counterpunch by the Democratic party in the continuing redistricting war that began in Texas and has spread across multiple states.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed public consent, which it received with nearly 65% of the vote.
National Implications
Democrats need to flip just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's congressional elections.
The party that holds the majority will shape the remaining period of the sitting president's term, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its political program or face resistance, congressional probes and possible additional obstacles.
